Lange//Berweck//Lorenz: Forests and Tides (2021) by Midori Hirano
Short Description / Kurzbeschreibung
„Forests and Tides“ is a composition based on the image of tides which closely interact with the earth’s activity. The wave patterns are slowly changing or shifting by the variation of gravitational force over time, and the trees in the forest swing in response to the wind which is created from the movement of tides.
This movement will be translated by the three performers into the different patterns of sound waves in order to generate dynamics by interacting with each other. Just as the tide is created by the interaction of the sun, the moon, and the earth, the three performers play the role of each planet and influence what happens to nature on the earth.
Then it returns to its original place in silence in the end. This is about the environment we live in, which has been deeply entwined in the whole universe.
The whole score is basically written in a classical way, but with brief instructions of parameter settings for Oscillators, Arpeggiators, Distortions, or Modulations on each Synthesizer’s parts. However the detailed expression is left to the all performers.

Short Biography / Kurze Biographie
Lange//Berweck//Lorenz is a Berlin-based trio for live electroacoustic music. Founded in 2014 in collaboration with Belgian pianist Colette Broeckaert, the collective’s projects pursue the realization of electronic scores, the restoration and (re)performance of electronic works from the past, and the collaboration with contemporary composers on new pieces. Today Silke Lange, Sebastian Berweck and Martin Lorenz present themselves as a trio on stage with a laboratory of analog and digital synthesizers and machines, the live performance on the instruments is extended by video and light design. The ensemble performs at festivals and concert series of contemporary and electronic music: Philharmonie Luxembourg, Musiques & Recherches Bruxelles, Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik Darmstadt, Multiphonies GRM Paris, ZKM Karlsruhe, Collegium Novum Zurich, SWR Attacca Festival Stuttgart, Ultraschall Festival Berlin.
